Qsine's Machine Shop

Small shop, big capabilities...

Qsine has a small but comprehesive machine shop consisting of a 9 axis CNC mill/turn machine, a 4 axis CNC vertical milling center (VMC), two manual engine lathes, a bridgeport mill and a wide range of precision measuring tools.

Qsine's machine shop started as a prototype facility and is now growing into a capable production jobshop. The machine shop is very complimentary with our fabrication and welding facilities. We find that the combination allows us to complete products that cause difficulties in stand-alone machine shops or fabrication shops.

Our 9 axis Okuma mill/turn is a true world class CNC machine. Our focus with this machine is "Done in one setup" complex parts. It is equipped with a gantry style robot that automatically loads material and removes the finished part. This machine can complete complex parts unattended with any it's angle milling head and in-process probing system that measures parts to verify tolerances.

The VMC's primary purpose is to produce specialty, hydraulic integrated circuits and manifolds; a niche that we got into in 2001. However, we also do general machine shop production on it as well. Our focus is small quantity runs with an emphasis on complex parts: something we got adjusted to doing prototype work.

Having our own machine shop lets us not only produce parts for our products but it lets us build tooling and fixtures for them as well. The machines are still used for prototyping and building parts for experimental testing apparti when we are developing new products.

We have made some modifications and tools for the CNC vertical mill that gives us some unique capabilities. They are discussed in detail on our CNC Tricks page. One modification is Air Through Spindle which ports compressed air down the spindle for running +40,000 RPM tools. This allows us to run very small tools used to created extremely fine details.

We also use an Qsine developed engraving tool for doing in-machine marking and part identification. It works on uneven surfaces and high feed rates.
